Stuart’s Opera House, southeast Ohio’s premier showcase for the performing arts, located on the Public Square of Nelsonville.
These historic buildings are pleasant reminders of a bygone era when coal was king and Nelsonville was the largest city in Athens County. In 1871 nearly 200,000 tons of coal from 40 area mines left by rail and another 75,000 more tons were shipped via canals. Nelsonville is also where the beautiful six-point “star brick” pavers were made and can be seen on sidewalks and streets.
