Program
Hocking‘s Educational Paraprofessional Technology provides the training required for employment in the early childhood education field. Whether you are currently employed in the field and need to fulfill state education requirements or would like to pursue a career in early childhood education, this program offers you a wide range of skills that you will find helpful in your work with children. Courses include child development, instructional strategies, academic skills, general education, classroom management and application of technology in the classroom.
If you began working as an educational paraprofessional (teacher's aide) in Ohio prior to January 8, 2002, recent legislation requires that you meet one of the following requirements before January 2006 in order to retain your position in education:
- Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtain an Associate Degree (or higher); or
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local assessment: 1) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics; or 2) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
The Educational Paraprofessional program meets the education requirements outlined above. Course work is offered at times that are convenient to you.
If you are new to the field of early childhood education, this program provides the course work for you to become licensed and work as an educational paraprofessional within the Ohio school system.
If you plan to continue your early childhood education for full teacher certification at a 4-year institution, the Educational Paraprofessional Technology provides a solid base of course work for transfer. (If your goal is teaching at the middle school or high school levels, we encourage you to meet with an advisor in the School of Arts and Sciences regarding appropriate course work).
