Personal Information

Due to the number of applications for the Level I (LPN) Nursing program, applicants are assigned a clinical start quarter. Once you have met all admission requirements, you will be assigned a clinical start quarter based on your date of file completion. Based on the number of applications, the length of time from date of file completion to beginning clinicals varies. You will be given a clinical start quarter when your admission file is complete.

Admission File Completion
Students are accepted on a space-available basis (by date of file completion) after you meet all of the following criteria:

1) Admission Application
Complete the admission application indicating your earliest quarter of enrollment and pay the $15 application fee.

  • You will not be considered for clinicals before the quarter you indicate on your admission application.
  • Your earliest quarter of enrollment indicates when you are interested in beginning the Level I program. The quarter that you are accepted to start clinicals will be based on your date of file completion

2) High School Transcript or GED
Provide an official transcript indicating graduation from an accredited high school or proof of successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) test. High school diplomas earned through correspondence schools are not acceptable with the exception of those granted by the American School, Chicago, Illinois, after September 1, 1974.

  • If your high school class has not yet graduated, submit the Statement of Expected Graduation form completed by your high school guidance counselor and/or principal. An official high school transcript must be submitted prior to the first day of your clinical quarter or you forfeit your spot in the clinical class.

3) Entrance Testing
Complete entrance testing. Take the Compass, ASSET or the ACT and achieve scores that would place you into college level course work. See "Assessment Scores and Course Requirements" below.

Scores are valid for four years. You have the opportunity to take the entrance test a total of three (3) times. The ASSET test has only two forms and it can be taken only twice. There are many versions of the Compass test. If you do not achieve the required scores after the first test, you should speak to the Associate Dean of the Level I program. Recommendations for remediation will be given.

    4) Developmental Courses
If you are unsuccessful after testing three times, or choose not to reassess, you must take the developmental courses required by your score. It is required that these courses be taken at Hocking College. If you choose to take the developmental courses you do not have to complete the second or third ASSET or Compass test. See "Assessment Scores and Course Requirements" below for levels required for clinical acceptance.

Assessment Scores and Course Requirements
In order to begin clinicals, assessment and/or course work must be at college level in all three subject areas (reading, writing, and math). Classes for each subject area are listed sequentially. See notes below for clinical acceptance requirements.

Pre-acceptance Courses: If you assessed into Basic Math, Fundamentals of Reading or Reading Communications courses, you must successfully complete these courses to be considered for clinical acceptance. You will not be eligible for a clinical spot until all pre-acceptance developmental courses are completed. The last day of the quarter that you complete your last developmental course will be used as the date for completing this entrance requirement. If completion of developmental courses for any given quarter results in multiple applicants completing their admission file, applicants will be rank ordered by their Hocking College grade point average. Completion of pre-acceptance developmental courses and all other admission requirements moves you to Conditional Acceptance. See below for Conditional Acceptance information.

Conditional Acceptance Courses: If you assess, or complete course work, to Communications I and Pre-Algebra or above in all subject areas (reading, writing, and math) you will be conditionally accepted for a clinical start quarter. You must be at College Level in all three subject areas prior to starting clinicals. If Communications I and Pre-Algebra course work is not satisfactorily completed by the last day of the quarter prior to your clinical quarter, your application to the Nursing program will be withdrawn and you will need to reapply for admission.

College Level Course: You must be at College Level in reading, writing, and math for full acceptance into the clinical portion of the Level I Nursing program.

Offer of Clinical Quarter

Once your admission file is complete, you will be given a clinical start quarter. This will be the latest quarter that you will begin clinicals. You may choose to begin general courses prior to the clinical quarter. See below for more information on general courses. The length of time from date of file completion to clinical quarter varies based on the number of applications to the Level I program.

Declining Clinical Quarter

If you choose not to accept the clinical spot offered, your application to the Level I (LPN) Nursing program will be withdrawn. To be reconsidered for the program, you must apply for readmission and will be assigned a clinical start quarter based on your date of readmission.

Occasionally a clinical spot becomes available earlier than the quarter originally offered. These spots will be offered to applicants on the waiting in order by date of file completion. You will not be penalized for declining a clinical spot offered earlier than your estimated clinical start quarter.

Change of Quarter

You may change your earliest quarter of enrollment (the first quarter that you would like to be considered for clinicals) from the time of application to completion of your admission file. A change of quarter processed after we have notified you of your estimated clinical start quarter will result in being assigned a new clinical start quarter by the date your change of quarter is processed.

Tuition Deposits

In order to reserve your clinical spot in the Level I program, you are required to submit two $50 advance tuition deposits as outlined below:

  • The first non-refundable $50 advance tuition deposit must be paid within 6 weeks of notification of your estimated clinical start quarter. Failure to submit the payment by the due date will result in withdrawal of your application to the Level I program. The second non-refundable $50 advance tuition deposit must be paid six weeks prior to the start of your clinical quarter. Failure to submit the payment by the due date will result in withdrawal of your application to the Level I program.
  • This non-refundable deposit is applied to your critical quarter tuition and should be mailed to the Hocking College Admission Processing Office, 3301 Hocking Parkway, Nelsonville OH 45764. Failure to submit the payment to the proper office may result in a delay in processing and/or missing the tuition deposit deadline.

Financial aid, the AES Payment Plan, and/or thrid party funding cannot be used as a form of payment for the advance tuition deposit. You will be notified by mail when advance tuition deposit payments are due.

General Courses

You may register as a General Nursing student and take selected courses before being admitted to the Nursing Program. This option costs additional time and money, however, it does lighten your course load. It is important to consult with a financial aid counselor as to the implications for financial aid and with a nursing faculty advisor for assistance in scheduling. It is recommended that you take only two quarters of general courses prior to entering clinicals.

Appeal Process

Appeals regarding the nursing application process and/or clinical quarter follow the Hocking College Due Process Review Procedure. The procedure consists of two stages: the informal stage and the formal stage. Most issues are resolved at the informal stage, in which you have an opportunity to present your concerns to the Nursing Admission Appeals Committee. However, there are occasions when the concerns cannot be resolved at the informal stage, and you have the option of proceeding to the formal (hearing) stage. The complete due process procedure is available in the Hocking College Student Guide. Appeal forms are available at the admission office.

Personal Information

You are responsible for keeping your mailing address, email, and phone number updated with the Hocking College admission processing office. Failure to do so may result in missed communications and withdrawal of your application to the Level I program. Your admission file address, email, and phone are separate from current student data. Changing this information with the records/cashiers department or through the Student Information System online does not change it in your admission file. Contact the admission processing office directly (1-877-HOCKING, extension 7070) to update your information.
