The College will not be accepting new students into the Dietetic Technician program (two-year associate degree) after Fall 2007. The Dietary Manager program will continue. The program is developing an associate degree that will feature a blend of Dietary Manager and Culinary programs, and is also exploring articulation with four-year colleges in the area.
The Program
Two opportunities exist within the nutrition and dietetics program:
- Dietary Manager Certificate program
- Associate Degree Dietetic Technician program
You will be trained to be part of the healthcare and food service management team.
Dietary Manager (1 Year Certificate)
Dietary managers work with registered dietitians to provide quality nutritional care for clients.
Learn By Doing
You will prepare healthy food, identify quality sanitation and create menus for regular and modified diets. You will complete 150 hours of supervised clinical experiences to meet the competency requirements of the Dietary Managers Association.
Upon successful completion of the three-quarter program you will receive the Dietary Manager Certificate. You are now eligible to take the national examination to earn these credentials:
- Certified Dietary Manager (CDM)
- Certified Food Protection Professional (CFPP)
Jobs For Grads
Grads provide quality nutritional care in long-term care and rehabilitation facilities. Some tasks include:
- conduct routine nutritional screening
- calculate nutrient intake
- implement diet plans
Grads also work in school food service programs. As a food service manager in long-term care and schools the dietary manager will perform the following managerial tasks:
- interview, hire and train employees
- purchase, receive and store food following quality standards
- implement a food safety system that complies with HACCP guidelines
According to the US Department of Labor, salaries range from $23,000 to $33,000.

Dietetic Technician (2 Year Associate Degree)
Prepare for a career in health and nutrition. You will learn to teach patients about disease prevention, health promotion, and medical nutrition therapy.
Learn By Doing
The dietetic technician major prepares the student for employment as a dietetic technician and for eligibility to take the national registration exam to become a dietetic technician, registered (DTR). Most students complete the course of study in 7-8 quarters. Upon completion the student is awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The program consists of classes taken on campus which are coordinated with six clinicals at various sites such as hospitals, long-term care facilities and WIC programs. You will obtain hands-on experience at these sites and a minimum of 450 clinical hours as required by the American Dietetic Association.
Jobs for Grads
Upon completion of the program, the graduate is qualified to be employed as a dietetic technician and will work under the supervision of a registered dietitian. Many of our graduates find employment in hospitals, long-term care facilities, WIC programs and schools. Major job responsibilities can be in the area of food service management and/or clinical nutrition.
Under supervision of a registered dietitian you will be qualified to:
- interview and provide nutrition counseling to clients
- develop nutrition care plans, evaluate progress and document
- analyze and calculate dietary intakes
- develop and provide nutrition education programs and material
- manage a food service operation
According to the US Department of Labor, salaries range from $22,000 to $31,000.

The Dietetic Technician program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.
