Surgical Technology involves handling the surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques and combines the knowledge of human anatomy to facilitate the surgical procedure.
The Program
Hocking College is affilated with Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) in Newark, Ohio. The surgical technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accrediation af Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)
The program for an associates degree in applied science starts each fall and runs for six consecutive quarters. The program for a certificate in surgical technology starts each fall and runs for four consecutive quarters. All students in the program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam at the end of four quarters..
Learn by Doing
Starting the second quarter, students are in clinicals two days a week. They will have a preceptor from the faculty where they are assigned. The students progress from observing surgery to functioning independently as a surgical technologist.
Jobs for Grads
Out of the Gate - Certified surgical technologists are employed in hospital operating rooms, hospital obstetric units, central supply units, physicians' offices, and out patient surgical centers.
Job Market Outlook
- Expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupation through 2014.
- Technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser technology, will permit an increasing number of new surgical procedures to be performed and also will allow surgical technologists to assist with a greater number of procedures.
