Your favorite science classes were the ones where you got to combine all sorts of chemicals and watch the reaction. Putting math & chemistry to practical use is your thing. You like to see how things work, how processes come together to make products. Explore Industrial Ceramics.
The Program
Industrial ceramics is the field that develops and creates many of the materials that you use today! Ceramics products range from construction materials (like brick, tile, etc.) to aerospace, bioceramic, fiber optic, superconductor and automotive materials.
This Industrial Ceramics technology is the only program in the United States that exclusively trains technicians for the ceramic industry!
Study raw materials, processing methods, combustion, testing and analysis. After this program, you can:
- Characterize and identify raw materials by lab testing.
- Blend, mold, make, dry press, slip cast, perform extrusion and dry ceramic materials.
- Set up and operate burners and monitor heat treatment of ceramics products
- Analyze and respond to industrial problems.
This program has received the Ohio Board of Regents Program Excellence Award twice, the U.S. Department of Education Secretary Award, and has been recognized as an Exemplary Program by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges.
Learn By Doing
Get real experience both in state-of-the-art labs and through summer industrial co-ops. Holl and Shaw labs offer you equipment right on campus, where you will learn about pilot scale processing, heat treatment, analytical characterization, and thermal analysis.
Then, get real world experience working in the ceramics industry. Many of these summer co-ops lead to employment offers after graduation!
Jobs for Grads
Out of the Box - There are about 6 waiting jobs for every graduate of this technology- so take your pick! Grads find employment in ceramic and related industries performing jobs such as.
- Process Technicians
- Quality Control Technicians
- Combustion Control Technicians
Starting salaries range from $29,000 - 32,000!
Down the Road - With additional hard work and/or training, some grads become supervisors, plant managers, district sales representatives, lab managers, and process engineers.
