Ever heard of "fish farming"? The fastest growing area of agriculture is the aquaculture business. If you like to be on and around water, working with animals and watching things grow, think about becoming a part of the booming fish field. Explore Hocking College's Fish Management and Aquaculture Program.
The Program
Prepare to work at either a public or private water resource management, fish management and propagation agency. Get ready to use, deploy and maintain fish sampling equipment, collect useful data and evaluate the condition or status of an aquatic ecosystem. Learn to culture fish and aquatic species for sport fish management and the commercial food fish market. Conduct pond, lake and stream assessment and restoration studies, and explore fish husbandry and aquaculture!
Also, train for the State pesticide applicators license in this technology!
Don't forget about the professional and social opportunities related to this technology!
Fish Management & Aquaculture Major: This program is for students primarily interested in seeking employment in fisheries management or fish propagation after acquiring their 2-year Associate Degree. Both public and private sector positions are available with this major. In the public sector, jobs include technical positions in state and federal fish and game agencies, while in the public sector, grads find jobs with commercial fish farms and aquatic consulting firms.
Fish Management & Aquaculture Science: This program is for students primarily interested in seeking biological or administrative positions in fisheries management or fish propagation after completion of a bachelor’s degree. Upon completion of the “Science” major you will qualify for the same 2-year degree positions as the “Management” major but will be better prepared to go on to a 4-year program and expand your job opportunities. If you are interested in job prospects that extend beyond technical positions, consider completing this major and then finishing your bachelor’s degree.
Learn By Doing
Fish Management and Aquaculture gets you involved in learning. First, put theory into practice at Lake Snowden Education and Recreation Park- which houses the fish production facility owned by Hocking College. Work with our holding house and several fish ponds. Experience firsthand what it takes to actually run a real hatchery.
Then, work in a State or Federal agency for your practicum. Coordinate local lake and stream water quality monitoring and assessment or work with fish personnel to assess fish population of natural waters. Join a fisheries research team working in Canada. These opportunities and more are waiting.
