Hocking College Wildlife Management and Wildlife Sciences

Do you dream of working outdoors? Do you like fish and wildlife? Then the Hocking College Wildlife program is for you. Our "hands on" educational approach prepares you to work as a wildlife professional in either the public or private sector, or to continue on for a 4-year degree.

The Program
The Wildlife program has two majors to choose from, depending upon your career goal. Both prepare you for a career working with both game and non-game species of fish and wildlife. Your choice of majors depends on whether you intend to go on to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in a 4-year program after leaving Hocking College, or whether you plan to enter the job market upon completion of your 2-year degree from Hocking:

  • Wildlife Management Major: This program is for students primarily interested in seeking employment in fish and wildlife careers after acquiring their 2-year Associate Degree. Most positions with Ohio County and State Parks, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife require a 2-year wildlife degree.
  • Wildlife Science Major: This program is for students considering going on for a 4-year Bachelors degree. Students in the “Science” major take additional hours of math, biology, and more transferable classes in Social Sciences that aid in transfer to another school. Upon completion of the “Science” major you will qualify for the same 2-year degree positions as the “Management” major but will be better prepared to go on to a 4-year program. Most professional positions with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service require a 4-year degree, as do most state wildlife agencies outside Ohio.

Jobs for Grads
The Wildlife Management Major will qualify you for entry-level jobs such as county wildlife officer, fish or wildlife technician, park naturalist, and county soil and water conservation district wildlife specialist positions in Ohio, plus some technician and assistant jobs with some other state and federal agencies.

The Wildlife Science Major will qualify you for the same type of positions as the “Management” major, but upon completion of your 4-year degree you will also be eligible for all types of entry-level positions with federal and state agencies throughout the United States.

Starting salaries range from $18,000 to $25,000.

Options for a Bachelors Degree
Hocking College’s University Center offers a campus-based 4-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Wildlife and Fish Management and Conservation through a partnership with the University of Rio Grande. Graduate from either Hocking College Wildlife major can remain on campus and complete their 4-year degree in an additional 2-years of study.

Transfer options are also available for other quality 4-year wildlife programs, such as West Virginia University, University of Idaho, and State University of New York at Cobleskill.
