The Program
The Theater Arts and Management Technology prepares you for a career in theater
performance, management, or technical theater. Along with an introduction to
all aspects of theater, you will select one of these areas for in-depth study
and training – all involving hands-on experiences.
The primary venue for this program is the beautiful Stuart’s Opera
House, a renovated nineteenth-century theater located on the Public Square in
Nelsonville, Ohio. The Opera House hosts a wide variety of shows, concerts,
and theater productions each year. Both studio classes and performances will
be scheduled in this theater.
If you already have intensive theatrical background we encourage you to submit
a portfolio for examination. You may receive advanced credit for some courses,
based upon experience equated to the college level.
The first two quarters, all Theater Arts and Management students complete a
theater “core” which develops foundational skills that are
essential for any career in theater. You will take beginning classes in
performance and develop your acting and improvisational skills while gaining a
solid foundation in lighting, stagecraft and sound in intense, modularized
courses which culminate in a quarterly student production.
Your third through sixth quarter of study, you will choose from one of three
focused areas – performance, technical theater, or theater management.
-
Performance – Acting
Intensify your acting experience, working with both classical and modern
texts and bringing them to life. With in-depth scene study of American
and European theater, your courses and involvement in a quarterly production
give you the stage experience you need. Also, gain a multi-national
perspective with an opportunity to partner with British students for
performances both in London and the USA.
-
Technical Theater
Experience and train in every aspect of stagecraft from set construction and
rigging to costuming and make-up. Develop skills in lighting and sound.
Design and implement lighting, sound, and sets for the theater as well as
other venues. A study abroad opportunity at Havering College offers you the
opportunity to gain experience in London, putting your technical skills to
the test in productions on both sides of the Atlantic.
-
Theater Management
Perhaps you are interested in the business of theater and entertainment.
Discover the organization and management of both professional and amateur
theatrical companies. Learn to develop strategic plans and to market a
venue to attract audiences for the performing arts. A study abroad
opportunity in London will enhance your resume with a multi-national
immersion experience.
International Experience - “CrossOver Project”
As a student in the Theater Arts and Management Technology, you will have an
opportunity to study abroad at Hocking College’s sister institution,
Havering College in London, England. This unique project will give the
international experience of living, studying, and working on a performance
in one of the most theatrically “alive” cities in the world.
Travel, food, lodging and other related expenses average $3,000 and are in
addition to regular tuition and course fees. Currently, students have performed Godspell.

simultaneously earn certificates in each area.
