Tutoring

Tutoring services make it possible for many students to achieve greater academic success: to earn a higher grade, to pass instead of fail, to remain in their chosen technology, to stay in school, and for some developmental and/or disabled students, to be in school. Tutoring assistance can also help students increase their self-confidence, improve their study skills and develop beneficially supportive relationships with other students—all of which contribute to learner success and student retention.

The Peer Tutoring Program at Hocking College provides peer tutoring as a free service to any student upon request. Student may seek tutoring support on their own or they may be referred by members of the faculty or staff. The student's length of involvement in the tutoring program is dependent on the needs of the individual student.

The coordinator of the program works in cooperation with the faculty of all departments to provide competent tutors for the many courses for which tutoring assistance is requested. Peer tutors are hired by the program coordinator to tutor a specific course or a particular subject area such as math or English Support.

Tutoring services are delivered through several different formats to meet the various needs of students:

  • Traditional one-on-one tutoring.
  • Lab tutoring: the tutor is available during regularly scheduled hours in the lab to provide assistance as needed. This method is very effective. It places the tutors throughout the college, readily available to the students on a walk-in basis. This format is in high demand and is particularly valuable in the Math Lab and Natural Resources labs.
  • Group tutoring: the tutor accompanies the instructor “in the field” and works with a group of students while the instructor is working with other students. Instructors and students find this to be a very valuable method.
  • Drop-in tutoring: the tutor is scheduled in a specific place for specific hours each week and students come for tutoring as needed.
  • Readers and Note-takers: these can be assigned for students who have special needs as determined by the course instructor and the Access Center.

Hocking College is committed to academic excellence and learner success. The Peer Tutoring Program supports and promotes both of these major objectives by providing students with the specialized individualized assistance they may need to successfully complete even the most challenging courses.
