Who is eligible to use the Health Center?
All students currently enrolled at the college are eligible for services. Faculty and staff are also treated for sudden onset of illness or injury while on campus. All students must be 18 years of age to receive treatment. We require parental consent for all students under 18 years of age before any treatment can be delivered. How much does it cost?
It does not cost to see the nurse for the treatment of minor illnesses, wound care or over-the counter medicine. However, there is a charge for immunizations, ace wraps, ice packs, and pregnancy tests. If the student is referred to a physician or is seen at a hospital, they are responsible for any charges incurred by these visits. Students are strongly recommended to carry Health Insurance.

Physician referrals
If your illness is uncomplicated, you may only need to follow a regimen of self-care. If you need the services of a doctor, dentist, or hospital, an appointment can be scheduled for you through the Health Center. The Health Center provides referrals to area Health Care Facilities.

Student Health Insurance Questions
The College offers an affordable Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan, administered by Student Assurance Services Inc., underwritten by Columbia Life Insurance, to all students attending Hocking College. Students must be physically and actively attending classes on campus to enroll in this insurance plan.

Participation in this insurance plan is voluntary; however, we encourage you to review your personal situation to determine if you need coverage. The coverage is designed to provide benefits for medical expenses arising from an accident or illness including those that occur off campus and during interim vacations. We strongly encourage all students to have health insurance. Health insurance can provide peace of mind for those unexpected and often expensive visits to health care facilities for unforeseen injuries. Injuries occurring at home, at the College, or in the field, are the responsibility of the student.

Insurance costs for the 2007-08 year for Students under 30 yrs. of age are as follows for those entering:

Fall Quarter (1st Quarter): The amount is $685.00. This amount can be paid for in the 3 installment premium rates of $234.00 listed on the brochure. Due dates are listed in the brochure.
Winter Quarter (2nd Quarter): The cost is $490.00. This amount must be paid in full.
Spring Quarter: The cost is $343.00. This amount must be paid in full.
Summer Quarter: The cost is $168.00. This amount must be paid in full.

Enrollment periods are very strict. Students and eligible dependents may enroll in the plan during the following periods:

1st Quarter 9-15-07 to 10-31-07
2nd Quarter 01-01-08 to 2-01-08
3rd Quarter 3-20-08 to 4-20-08
Summer 6-20-08 to 07-20-08

Premiums must be received by the Student Assurance Services, Inc. office within the enrollment period. If you do not enroll in coverage during the enrollment period stated above, you may enroll within 30 days after involuntary loss of coverage under another plan, marriage, or birth, or adoption of a child. Enrollment in this insurance program is limited to the dates and conditions stipulated above.

  • The plan ends Fall Quarter every year. Therefore, every Fall Quarter, students must re-enroll in the plan to be covered for the following year. The above rates are for the 2007-2008 year.
  • Students can enroll in the Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan online by going to the Student Assurance Services website @ www.sas-mn.com.

Or, the enrollment form can be downloaded and sent with your payment directly to Student Assurance Services.

Brochures and enrollment forms are also available at The Health Center in JL 241. Students must either enroll online or send their payment to Student Assurance Services within the enrollment period outlined above. Health insurance is not included in tuition costs.

If your sponsor is paying for your insurance, please ensure they make the check or money order made payable to "Student Assurance Services," NOT Hocking College.

Recommended Vaccinations
Hocking College does not require proof of immunizations for admission. Only students entering Nursing, Allied Health and Public Safety programs are required to have a physical exam and specific immunizations. If you plan to enter one of these programs, you will receive a Physical Form and information about the required immunizations.

Although the college does not require immunizations, The Health Center supports the recommendations of the American College of Health and The Center of Disease Control Guidelines:

Meningitis Vaccination
The Hocking College Health Center wants students and parents to be informed about meningococcal disease, a potentially fatal bacterial infection commonly referred to as meningitis. Students living in the Resident Halls must indicate on their housing contract if they have received Meningitis or Hepatitis B vaccinations. Although these immunizations are strongly encouraged, they are NOT mandatory. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that college students, particularly freshman living in residence halls, be educated about meningitis and the benefits of vaccination. The panel based its recommendation on recent studies showing that freshman living in residence halls have a six fold increase risk for meningitis. Vaccination can reduce the risk of meningitis.

Meningitis is rare. However, when it strikes, its flu-like symptoms make diagnosis difficult. If not treated early, meningitis can lead to swelling of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal column as well as severe and permanent disabilities and even death. Between 100 and 125 meningitis cases occur on college campuses and as many as 15 students will die from the disease.

A vaccine is available that protects against four of the bacteria that cause meningitis in the United States – types A, C, Y and W-135. These types account for nearly two thirds of meningitis cases among college students.

The vaccine is available at the Hocking College Health Center. Students must go to the Health Center to schedule an appointment. Due to the increased cost of the meningitis vaccine, the vaccine must be paid for in advance before it is ordered. The cost of the vaccine will vary and will be dependent upon our costs.

We encourage you to learn more about College Immunizations by visiting the following websites:

Center of Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/recs/teen-schedule.htm
Ohio Department of Health: http://www.odh.ohio.gov (click on College Immunizations).

Hepatitis B Vaccination
Hepatitis B is a serious disease that can lead to long term, chronic illness, causing liver damage, liver cancer and even death. Each year it is estimated that over 200,000 people, mostly young adults, get infected with Hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis B Vaccination is more than 90% effective in preventing Hepatitis B! Hepatitis B virus is spread through contact with the blood and body fluids of an infected person. People can get the infection without knowing they got it. The vaccination series is available at the Health Center. Please contact the Health Center for more information about the Hepatitis B Vaccine.

Flu Vaccine
To prevent influenza, The Health Center offers the flu shot every fall beginning mid October and continuing until supplies last. All eligible students and staff are encouraged to get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine can protect the student against the flu and missed classes.

There is a charge for immunizations. All charges are posted to the student’s account..

TB Skin Testing
Tuberculosis Skin Testing is required for all students in Nursing, Allied Health, and Public Safety Programs. A TB Skin Test is also required for all incoming international students.
