Nelsonville is a community rich in the history of Southeastern Ohio and the Hocking Valley. Restored buildings and shops line the public square. A turn-of-the-century fountain marks the center of town and Victorian style homes line the streets of the city. Forested hills surround the town and farmhouses dot the countryside.

Nelsonville is a pleasant scenic drive from most major cities. Driving distance in miles follows for some nearby cities.

The area's climate varies with the seasons. Warm, humid summers are followed by clear autumn days and cool nights. Winters are cold and damp with occasional snow. Spring can be changeable and wet. The area is most beautiful in the Spring and Autumn, when the temperatures are ideal and the hillsides are full of color with trees in blossom in the Spring and leaves changing in the Autumn. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway
Visitors can board old Engine 33 in Nelsonville for a scenic ride across the campus and through the hills of southeastern Ohio. The train runs on weekends from Memorial Day through October with special Christmas schedules.
 
Hocking Adena Bikeway
The Hocking Adena Bikeway is a beautiful trail through the hills of southern Ohio. The northern most point of the 16 mile bikeway begins at Hocking College. The bikeway winds through the hills and follows the path of the Hocking River, the southern point of the bikeway terminates in Athens. The Hocking College Recreation Center has bikes available for students who want to ride on the bikeway.
 
Hocking Woods Nature Center
Hocking Woods Nature Center features an interpretive building, wildlife habitats, ponds, walkways, feeding stations and seasonal programming for the public and groups of school children. All activities at the Nature Center are designed and conducted by Recreation and Wildlife students majoring in Interpretive Services.
 
International Bowhunter Challenge
The International Bowhunter Challenge is held on campus each summer and is sponsored by Hocking College and the International Bowhunter's Organization. The competition is the third and final round which determines national champions in over ten major shooting classes for men, women, and youth. More than 2,000 archers compete each year.
 
Lake Snowden Education and Recreation Park
Located in Albany, Ohio, the Lake Snowden Education and Recreation Park provides a 675 acre lab for students in Natural Resources technologies. The park includes a 160 acre lake, a fish hatchery and fish ponds which serve as a training site for Fish and Wildlife, Fish Management and Aquaculture students. The Sauber Environmental Center, located at Lake Snowden, houses classrooms for Natural Resources.
 
The National Timber and Outdoor Show at Hocking College
Ohio's premier lumberjack and logging show is held on campus the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October. Over 55,000 visitors come to see the latest lumbering equipment and special attractions such as student and professional lumberjack competitions, and the popular Bunyan Burger. The National Timber and Outdoor Show is sponsored by Hocking College. Hocking students are involved in nearly every aspect of the show.
 
Robbins Crossing Living History Museum
Exhibits at the Robbins Crossing Living History Museum, part of Hocking's campus park, illustrates the history of Southeastern Ohio through a restored living history community. Each weekend throughout the summer and fall, costumed Interpretive Services students recreate the people and setting of rural 19th century Southeastern Ohio for thousands of visitors, many of whom arrive aboard the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway.
