Optional Practical Training (OPT) - Work Permit
Download OPT Package (.Zip)
Optional Practical Training is an opportunity to gain work experience to complement your academic program. F-1 students are entitled to one year of Optional Practical Training for each higher degree program. When it is time for you to do practical training, you need to attend a required OPT seminar at International Student Services prior to meeting with your advisor for final processing. You must apply for Optional Practical Training no later than the day you graduate or BCIS will not authorize your practical training. Please plan ahead. The application process at BCIS takes 90-120 days.
Optional Practical Training falls into four categories: (1) during the student's annual vacation and at other times when school is not in session if the student is eligible, and intends to register for the next term or session; (2) while school is in session provided that OPT does not exceed 20 hours a week; (3) full-time after the completion of all course requirements for the degree; and (4) full-time after completion of the course of study. OPT under the first three options would occur before completion of a course of study, while the last option would occur after completion of the course of study. Students must complete one full academic year of study before being eligible for OPT. OPT after completion of studies may not be part-time. While on OPT you must also notify International Student Services of any address changes within 10 days of moving. You must also provide International Student Services with the name and address of your employer.
