Annual Shrimp Harvest & Sale

The annual shrimp harvest and sale at the Hocking College Fish Hatchery at Lake Snowden, harvested by Hocking's Fish Management and Aquaculture students, will take place on Friday, September 28 beginning at 9 a.m. The fresh water shrimp will also be for sale the following day, Saturday, September 29 at the Athens Farmers Market located on East State Street.

The Seafood Institute has classified the Cultured Fresh Water Shrimp as a 'green' product. The shrimp look like regular sea shrimp but are milder in flavor. The mild flavor is also easier to season compared to sea shrimp. Fresh water shrimp are often preferred because people with allergies to sea shrimp are able to eat the fresh water variety.
The public is invited to come on Friday morning and observe or take part in the harvesting. Shrimp will be sold at noon or after the pond is harvested. If interested in purchasing the shrimp, bring a cooler, and the ice will be supplied. The shrimp will die after they are put on the ice, allowing for the freshest product available.

The hatchery is located off State Route 50 West on County Road 80. Follow the "Shrimp" signs to the site. Please call 740.698.1925 for more information.
