Student Loan Activation

It‘s important to activate your student loans...

If you wish to receive your student loans, you must complete the following:

Step 1 - Entrance Counseling (First-time borrowers only)

The federal government requires that you complete Entrance Counseling before your loan can be finalized.  Here’s what to do:

1. Visit www.dlssonline.com
2. Select Entrance Counseling
3. Read all information about your rights & responsibilities as a student loan borrower
4. Complete a 15 question quiz (12 of 15 must be right)
5. Type HOCKING when asked which college you want this information to be sent
6. Choose 00759800 as the correct code

Step 2 - Master Promissory Note

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is the legal binding contract that you must complete to receive your student loans. How to complete your MPN:

Visit dlenote.ed.gov

1. Select “Complete New MPN for Student Loan”
2. Choose Hocking Technical College as the school to which you want the information to go
3. Complete all eleven (11) steps
4. Use your PIN number* (from the US Department of Education, used on the FAFSA) to sign electronically OR
5. Complete a paper promissory note (keeping the other copy for your records) when it is mailed to you.  Return one to the Financial Aid Office at 3301 Hocking Parkway, Nelsonville, OH 45764

* Requesting a PIN (Personal Identification Number)

Your PIN number is used to complete the FAFSA Free Application For Student Financial Aid form and electronically sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN) for a student loan. 

If you do not have a PIN (Personal Identification Number) from the US Department of Education, you may request one by:

Visiting www.pin.ed.gov/

1. Complete the required information as requested.
2. Include your e-mail address on your pin application and you will receive an electronic response within 24 hours, otherwise you should receive your pin number in about 7-10 days.
