American Art, Design & Marketing

Program

Associate of Applied Business in American Art, Design and Marketing

At Hocking College you will develop the skills necessary to become an accomplished artist in either of our two-year art and design degree programs. Whether you are already an established artist or you’re just beginning to explore your artistic side, this program offers you an opportunity to develop techniques and professional skills to be competitive in your field. You will learn how to build a professional portfolio of creative work, develop marketing skills related to the business of art, and learn, through experience, the fundamentals of gallery operations.

The Associate of Applied Business in Art, Design, and Marketing is designed for students who plan to complete their higher education at Hocking College and enter the job market upon graduation.

The Associate of Arts in Fine Art is designed for students who may go on to a four-year university in order to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. The Associate of Arts degree has been approved for transfer.

In your first quarter of your art and design degree program, you will choose between three areas of specialization: glass, ceramics or photography. Elective courses include painting, drawing, photography and small metals/jewelry. You may also take courses in the area of specialization other than the one you have chosen to pursue.

  • Glass
Introduction to Glass Studio: In this introduction to contemporary glass art, the fundamentals of martial usage, design and construction will be the backdrop of an approach to this medium. You will learn the basics of many approaches; such as fusing, slumping, and stained glass.

Glass Studio I - Casting: You will learn how to kiln and ladle cast glass. Mold and object making will be covered in addition to kiln operation and firing procedures. After completing this course you’ll begin to learn more about function versus fine based art.

Glass Studio II – Fused & Slumped: Using traditional and non-traditional techniques you will begin an advanced approach to flat glass work. By moving back in to the oven, we will discuss how to push the limits of fused and slumped glass. By executing an array of techniques, such as; painting, sandblasting, and kiln carving you’ll understand the full potential of glass art.

Glass Studio III – Hot Glass: You will learn the basics of glassblowing in the hot glass studio and flameworking in the warm studio. Proper tool usage and studio safety are covered allowing you to understand how to create art in a safe environment. Also, you’ll be exposed to solid and figurative sculpting.

  • Ceramics
Introduction to Ceramic Studio: In this introduction to contemporary ceramic art, the elements and principles of design will be the backbone for the creation of vessels and sculptural forms. You will construct functional vessels using basic hand building techniques, including pinch, slab and coil construction methods, as well as the skills required to fashion the form by throwing on the wheel. You will gain an understanding of basic glazing techniques and applications while comprehending the five different stages of clay.

Ceramic Studio I - Figurative Sculpture: In this course you’ll explore figurative sculpture using basic hand building techniques. The class will include detailed technical information on facial features and proportions. Focus will be on the expression and gesture of the figure. Torsos, busts, figures and animals will be made using hollow form sculpting techniques. Found object impressions, mark making, and carving in wet clay will help develop surface and story. We will work with earthenware and multiple electric firings. Decoration techniques will include a painterly approach to under-glazes and glazes. Some non-traditional finishes will be explored for non-functional sculptural pieces.

Ceramic Studio II - Combined Techniques: You’ll have an opportunity to explore an arsenal of techniques to be used in various combinations to produce engaging art pottery and art pieces. Compositions will rely on the relationship between parts, using advanced joining techniques and combined hand and wheel skills. Surface treatments using stretched slabs, slip inlay, textures, impressed designs, carving and piercing will be an integral part of the work. Ceramic materials will be combined with one or a variety of other materials for aesthetic or structural reasons. Extensive glaze tests will be conducted. A Raku and/or a smoke fire kiln will be used.

Ceramic Studio III – The Tile Mural & Mold Process: Using traditional casting techniques, you will be introduced to mold-making processes while investigating the meaning of multiples and repeated forms. You’ll start with designing and molding low-relief tiles then venture off the flat tile plane into the third dimension, from shallow to ultra-deep relief with a variety of additive and subtractive sculpting techniques. Glaze and decorating choices for enhancing dimensional texture will be explored, as well as installation procedures.

  • Photography
Introduction to Photo Studio - This course builds on the foundational knowledge and skills required for black & white photography.  The student will learn the basic elements of photography, such as light, composition, subject, and content, with an emphasis on photography as it relates to fine art and as a path to individual expression.

Photo Studio I – Color Photography: Learn the principles of color photography. Topics will include color theory, value and color, expressive color, as well as content and color. This course will approach the color photograph as a means of expression and communication.

Photo Studio II- Image and Concept: Students are encouraged to pursue individual projects. Emphasis will be on the process of realizing an idea. Gallery presentation will be covered and a group exhibition will be the final outcome.

Photo Studio III- Lighting and Product: This course is an introduction to studio lighting in connection with technical and conceptual aspects of product photography. Emphasis is placed on design, visual purpose and clarity. Topics covered include photographing objects of art, the portrait and commercial applications.

Beginning second quarter you will work with reputed and respected artisans to develop skills in your selected area. Portfolio development and interviews may lead to internship and/or apprenticeship opportunities with talented craftspersons.

Through business and marketing courses you will develop presentation, marketing, and management skills while learning to handle taxes, permits, pricing and distribution. You will network with working artisans and statewide arts organizations.

The art and design program offered at Hocking College prepares students for a wide range of opportunities in the field of art, design and marketing. The business principles provide a well-rounded education that allows students to enter the workforce with confidence.
