Course Placement

ACCUPLACER assessment is used to help place new students in the appropriate writing and math courses. The results do not determine admission to the college; however, they do assist your advisor in course registration.

What is ACCUPLACER?

ACCUPLACER is an adaptive assessment. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the assessment works this way, you must answer every question when it is first given. Each assessment is untimed so that you can give each question as much thought as you wish. You can change your answer to a particular question before moving on to the next question, but you cannot leave a question out or come back to it later to change your answer.

Entry Course Placement is Important to Your Success

You'll be more successful at Hocking and beyond when you start in the right classes. Your scores will determine where you start in writing and math. You may only need to take portions of the assessment. Most students enrolling at Hocking need to take at least part of the ACCUPLACER. Our goal is to ensure your classes are the right level for you.

Review is Recommended

Reviewing may enable you to bypass some courses and place into the highest level of courses in which you can be successful, saving you time and money. Sample questions may be found on ACCUPLACER's website.

Taking the ACCUPLACER

We strongly encourage you to take the ACCUPLACER before your QuickStart registration. Convenient walk-in assessment is available through the Registrar's Office in the Student Services Concourse in Light Hall. No appointment is necessary, call ahead for assessment hours. In order to assess, you will need the following:

  • Your Hocking College Student ID number or Social Security number
  • Photo identification

If you have not applied for admissions to Hocking and are taking the ACCUPLACER for another college or university, you will be charged a $25 fee.

Re-testing Policy

Students are allowed to test a total of three times.

Have You Taken the ACT?

ACT scores may be used for placement in English and math. If you had your ACT scores sent to Hocking College when you assessed, check WebAdvisor to confirm that we received them. You may also request that ACT send your scores to Hocking College (ACT Code 3352) or they may be submitted on an official high school transcript.

An official transcript must be mailed directly from your high school to the Hocking College Admissions Processing Office. Hand-carried high school transcripts and/or ACT score reports are not accepted.
