Course Placement

The COMPASS and ASSET assessments are used to help place new students in the appropriate reading, writing and math courses. The results do not determine admission to the college, however they do assist your advisor in course registration.

What is COMPASS?

  • Computerized assessment used by schools to determine placement into your first classes
  • Written by ACT
  • Has three sections: reading for comprehension, writing skills and math
  • Not timed, and takes the average student about two hours to complete

What is ASSET?

  • Convenient paper and pencil format
  • Takes approximately 25 minutes per section
  • Has three sections: reading , writing skills and math

Entry Course Placement is Important to Your Success

You'll be more successful at Hocking and beyond when you start in the right classes. Your scores will determine where you start in reading, writing and math. You may only need to take portions of the assessment. Most students enrolling at Hocking need to take at least part of the COMPASS or ASSET. Our goal is to ensure your classes are the right level for you.

Review is Recommended

Reviewing may enable you to bypass some courses and place into the highest level of courses in which you can be successful, saving you time and money. For more information and samples of COMPASS, visit the ACT COMPASS website. ASSET can be reviewed by going to the ACT ASSET website.

Taking the COMPASS or ASSET
