Medical Assistant Program Description
The Medical Assisting Program prepares graduates to enter the healthcare workforce as competent, entry-level medical assistants. The curriculum develops proficiency across the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (clinical and administrative skills), and affective (professional behavior) learning domains.
Medical assistants are uniquely trained allied health professionals who work primarily in ambulatory care settings such as physician offices, outpatient clinics, and group practices. As multi-skilled members of the healthcare team, graduates are prepared to perform a broad range of clinical and administrative duties while demonstrating professionalism, effective communication, and patient-centered care.

A Career as a Medical Assistant Makes for a Healthy Future
The Medical Assistant program prepares graduates for entry-level careers in ambulatory health care settings such as medical offices and clinics, and provides the student with a background sufficient for growth and advancement in the medical assisting profession.
Entry-level jobs include Certified Medical Assistant, either clinical, administrative or both; Phlebotomist*; or Electrocardiograph Technician*.
Medical management responsibilities include:
- Computer applications
- Patient reception
- Schedule, coordinate and monitor appointments
- Establish, organize and maintain patient medical records
- Coding and processing insurance claims
- Patient transactions, billing and bookkeeping
- Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services
Medical clinical responsibilities include:
- Measuring vital signs
- Assisting with examinations
- Sterilizing instruments
- Assisting with minor office surgery
- Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician
- Taking medical histories
- Running electrocardiograms
- Laboratory testing in urinalysis, hematology and microbiology
- Explaining treatment procedures to a patient
- Drawing blood
- Removing sutures and changing dressings
*Some employers require additional certification for this position
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are statements of what a student will be able to do when they have completed a program. They represent the knowledge and skills a program has determined are most important for students to gain from that program and include both the Success Skills (institutional outcomes) and Program Outcomes. SLOs are specific and measurable so the program can accurately assess the degree to which students have achieved each outcome, and they align with college and institution mission and values. Data on the achievement of SLOs is used to make improvements in the program and increase student success.

The job market for Medical Assisting is excellent. 100% reflects the percentage of graduates who chose to seek employment in their field for the 2024 cohort.

The Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited Medical Assistant programs are eligible to sit for the National Certified Medical Assistant CMA (AAMA) exam.
