Smart StartGet a Smart Start on Your College Career!

Sunday, August 11 - Friday, August 16 2019

Start your college career on the right foot by registering to attend Smart Start, a week-long event for first-year (and returning) students that focuses on building lasting relationships, and getting students acquainted with campus.

Got more questions? Check out some of our frequently asked questions below.

Smart Start is a week of social, recreational and developmental activities at Hocking College, the week before classes begin in the autumn. Activities are offered from early morning until late at night.

The program is based on the Hocking College Campus with some trips off-site. Enjoy activities such as clubs, sports, arts, crafts, shows, outdoor pursuits, movies, games and music, while earning an hour of college credit before classes even begin. You can move in to your college room a week early or commute for this program.

Although it is designed for first-year students, all students are welcome to attend.

We typically recommend Smart Start for students starting at Hocking College in Autumn Term who are 18-25 years old.

Smart Start costs $275. This includes all activities and transportation. If you are living on campus, you are not charged extra for moving in a week early.

Food is not included and is an additional (optional) cost of $105 for the week.

Meals are not provided for this event, but you can purchase meals for the week for only $105. This includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and works out to about $7 per meal.

Students attending Smart Start become familiar with campus and the local area. They become involved in positive activities, which may last through college. However, the most important reason students attend this program is to make friends! Our research shows that students who attend Smart Start have a better chance of graduating than those who do not.

In addition to making new friends, students who attend Smart Start will:
  • Move in one week early.
  • Participate in activities to become familiar with the Hocking College campus.
  • Venture into and explore the Hocking College community.
  • Daily adventures and excursions.
  • Learn where campus resources are located and how to use them.
  • Learn the campus and campus community before classes start.
  • Receive a free t-shirt.
Registration for Smart Start is limited as we can only accept 400 participants.

If you have any additional questions about Smart Start, please contact Kim Coy by email at coyk@hocking.edu or by calling (740) 753-6539.

Please include your name and your Student ID number in your message. Your Student ID number will be on your Hocking College acceptance letter.
